Equipment to determine cetan number experimentally
The invention
  • The problem to be solved:
    In the most widely used examination it is determined using density and medium boiling-point. This method can not be used in case of cetan number increasing additives, pure carbohydrogens, syntetical fuels. Our equipment is capable to determine cetan number with simulation of processes taking place in engines.
  • Definition:
    In our procedure the warmed diesel fuel is pressed through a capillar tube with gas pressure. The less the self ignition capability it has, the longer flame is built up at the end of the tube. Flame length of fuel flowing with constant volume stream decreases with growing self ignition capability. Relation between flame length and cetan number can be measured on each equipment using standards with determined cetan number by test engine.
  • Presentation:
    Cetan number is a valve describing the self ignition capability of diesel oil. The self ignition delay makes engine power worse, simultaneously the oil burnt imperfectly soils the environment. This is why it is essential to know cetan number exactly.
    The concrete examinations describing motorical characteristics are carried out with reference engines under regulations of DIN, ASA, Hungarian Standard (MSZ) and others. These examinations are made with the help of comparison to materials with determined cetan number. The reference engines are expensive and need a greater quantity of diesel oil.
    These is a nomorgam method as an alternative method developed to determine cetan number. In the most widely used examination it is determined using density and medium boiling-point. This method can not be used in case of cetan number increasing additives, pure carbohydrogens, syntetical fuels. Because spreading of these last it is necessary to build an equipment that is capable to determine cetan number with simulation of processes taking place in engines.

    Procedure
    In our procedure the warmed diesel fuel is pressed through a capillar tube with gas pressure. The fuel is ignited by an auxiliary flame. The less the self ignition capability it has, the longer flame is built up at the end of the tube. Flame length of fuel flowing with constant volume stream decreases with growing self ignition capability. Relation between flame length and cetan number can be measured on each equipment using standards with determined cetan number by test engine.
    Calibrating can be made easy and fast.

    Results
    Our examinations have resulted an error of 2%. Measuring with this and cheap equipment can be made within 30 minutes.
