Simple and versatile engines
The invention
  • The problem to be solved:
Programmable valve control, various optional working principles
  • Definition:
Multifunctional engine with high volume-specific performance. Automatically variable compression volume, in function of the performance needed. Engine control is performed by a microprocessor, also responsive to the driver's instructions.
  • Presentation:
The new engine offers the following opportunities : various ways of control (human speech included) of features like variable acceleration / deceleration rates, overtaking, engine brake, etc.
Automatic variation of the compression volume between Vc, min = 22.6 cm3 and V c, max = 58.8 cm3 is performed as a function of the power needed. The engine always runs at its optimal stroke volume (variable between 500 ÷ 2100 cm3), and at a high compression end pressure. For four-cycle operation, approx. 80% of the energy needed for compression can be recovered. Because the torque can be increased linearly or according to any other function, gear boxes of simpler construction can be used.

Thermal insulation is provided for the ignition area of the cylinders, for the exhaust piping, and until the turbo loader. By well-controlled ignition and multiple uses of the heat generated, the yield of the engine can be as high as 50 ÷ 60 %.

For the new engine type no camshafts, timing chain, liquid cooling and suction valves are needed. Combustion control is achieved by photo-diodes.

Application of the patented invention would generate a new revolution in engine manufacturing. A single engine type would be sufficient for all passenger cars, as the stroke volume can be varied between 500 ÷ 2100 cm3. For two-cycle engines the stroke volume can be as high as the equivalent of a four-cycle engine of 3600 cm3. Fuel is at a choice, petrol or diesel fuel can be equally used in the same engine, without structural modifications, just by using appropriated control programs (different fuel admission systems will be however needed). The piston of the engine can be used as well as an air compressor, in case of excess air also as an air working cylinder. The engine can be also constructed as a petrol-air hybrid power source. Used as an engine brake, all four cylinders act on the wheels, whereas two cylinders use the kinetic energy for filling up the compressed air tank. Driving uphill, the power of the turbo loaders is increased and extra fill of the air tanks results.

In city traffic, the consumption of the engine is at 3 litres/100 km, with a 60 ÷ 70% lower emission of pollutants (CO, NOx), to be further improved by exhaust catalysts. During idle-running or cold start, the engine reduces the stroke volume to 500 cm3, at a fuel consumption of 1.03 litres/hour.

Surely, many buyers will prefer the cars equipped with this innovative engine, offering versatility, larger output at less fuel consumption, better acceleration and friendly to the environment. Massive use of the new engine will contribute to better conservation of the fossil fuel reserves.

  • Application:
    Car industry
  • Advantages:
Better yield, lower consumption. More economical manufacturing, as various engine types can be created by changing the software in the central processing unit. Along with motor vehicles, the invention is also applicable to large diesel engines.
