The
invention
- The
problem to be solved:
Forming s spherical
shell from lane-type elements
|
- Definition:
The shell
structure is a raster, network or
skeleton formed from shell elements
arranged along a spherical surface. Each
of the shell elements is arranged along
the meridians of the sphere. In each knot
only two of the shell elements meet or
cover each other in such a way that
moving along an individual shell element,
that is covering the other inside or
outside the sphere.
|
- Presentation:
The
structure is formed from 6 or 10 shell
elements (see the Figure).
The elements of the 6-element shell
structure are divided into 10 intervals
of equal lengths. Similarly, the elements
of the 10-element shell structure are
divided into 18 intervals but of unequal
lengths. One shor interval is followed by
an interval longer by 43%. The meeting or
end points of the intervals are also the
knots (cover points). At these locations
connector devices are placed.
Each of the shell elements are formed
into a closed circle by joining their
start and end points then are bound
together. In the structure made of 6
shell elements the angle of the elements
is chosen to be 63 degrees. And in the 10
shell element structure the angle is
alternated 42 and 70 degrees.

- Application:
advertising,
decoration, logic toy
|
- Advantages:
All shell elements
are of identical form, so they can be
manufactured with high productivity and
low cost. The arrangement of the shell
elements is symmetric and simple
(transparent). The shell structure can be
constructed quickly.
