The opening ceremony

The opening ceremony started at 1000 o'clock AM on 4 May, in the Olympic Hall.
There appeared the exhibitors and, as honorary guests, His Excellency Petru Cordos, the Ambassador of Romania to Hungary; Mr. Gábor VARGA, the chairman of the Romanian Patent Office; dr. János LATORCAI, M.P., the chairman of the Economic Commission for the Hungarian Parliament; Mrs. POSTEINER, Márta TOLDI, the deputy-chairman of the Hungarian Patent Office (MSZH); Mr. Béla KENDE, the chairman of the Hungarian Industrial Right Protection and Author Rights Association (MIE).
The Main Sponsor, dr. János LATORCAI extended a welcome for Hungary to the participants and then the Ambassador of Romania extended his welcome to the inventors. Additionally, the deputy-chairman of the MSZH and the chairman of the MIE delivered also their salutations.
Mr. Farag MOUSSA, the chairman of the International Federation of the Inventor's Association (IFIA) had opened the exhibition. After this the honorary guests visited the exhibition.

The shown inventions, the interesting things of the exhibition

The catalogue contains the list of the 439 inventions shown.
One of the most interesting event of the exhibition was the performance of the International Invention's Shop of the IFIA on the Internet.

Romania was represented by 102 inventions and a populous delegation. At the entry of the Romanian stand the visitors were received by the Romanian Patent Office on one side and on the other side by the general information service of the Romanian Government Development Office (ANSTI). Their exhibited inventions covered the whole spectra of the Romanian invention activity. In their show equally appeared the research institutes, the companies and the private inventors, too. The Romanian Administration was represented by Mr. Mircea Valer PUSCA, the deputy-chairman and, Mr. Gábor VARGA, the deputy-chairman of the Romanian Patent Office was also present. The Romanian delegation was headed by Mr. Nicolae NAUM, the general director of the ANSTI, a former under-secretary of state. Their presentation was made possible in Budapest with the organisation of the state and a significant financial support.

Their own inventor associations organised the participation of the other foreign inventors from Russia, Poland, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Korea, Hong-Kong, Bulgaria, Slovakia and, there were also private inventors.
The exhibition level of the Hungarian inventions were very high. More inventors ingeniously and spectacularly presented their novelties and, the products of the first series could also be bought at the site.
The Hungarian Patent Office operated a customer service on their stand and their computerised data base could be used by the public to search in it.

Judgement, the results of the competition

The judgement of the inventions submitted could not be made by the delegates of the IFIA member associations through the internet before the opening, as planned, due to the fact that the descriptions of Romanian inventions arrived too late.
The sportsmanship made us to change the announced method and to evaluate all the inventions under the same conditions. This is why the inventions were evaluated at the spot by an international jury.
According to the inventiveness, the future utility and the demonstration level a score of 5 points each, 15 points altogether, could be obtained. The organisers ranked the inventions on the basis of the obtained scores within each classification sections. The jury selected the winner inventions in each classification section that obtained the highest score and awarded them the first (gold medal), the second and the third places (silver and bronze medals).
To the inventions obtaining more than 10 points a GENIUS medal prize were awarded.
The inventors who submitted the highest number of inventions became the winners of the absolute category or the place winners in the first ranks.
The organisers handed over 63 Olympic medals, altogether.

Prize-giving ceremony

The prizes were designed by Mr. Pál GYULAVÁRI, sculptor and made by Mr. György GÁL inventor (Caster Kft.).
The Prize-giving ceremony took place in the restaurant of the Stadion Hotel at 7 o'clock PM on 6 May.
Mr. Péter ERDÉLYI, the director of the DANUBIA Patent Agency and as the Amphitryon, were who extended his welcome to the participants.
Dr. János LATORCAI M.P., the chairman of the Economic Commission for the Hungarian Parliament, the Main Sponsor; dr. Miklós BENDZSEL, the chairman of the Hungarian Patent Office, sponsor and dr. Csaba SZÁNTAI, academician, the chairman of the Association of the Hungarian Inventors; Mr. Ottó JOKLIK, professor, Austria, delegate of the European Community into the EUREKA, were present on the event and they handed over the prizes.

The prize issued by Poland were awarded to András VEDRES for its invention called "ÖKO-YACHT".
The special prizes issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Country Development were awarded to the followings:
Mrs. Ernőné POLHAMMER dr. and partners: Wheat treatment with selenium
László BALLA dr. and partners: "Magdaléna" early ripening wheat variety,
László KÁLMÁN: "Biokál" pesticide family (the most beautiful agricultural exhibition).

Afterwards, the organisers offered a dinner for the participants.

Definition of the event:

This is a competition of inventors and a solemn event in Budapest, as well as on the Internet at: www.inventor.hu. This is simultaneously a market place of inventions and products made on the basis of patents.

Participation conditions:

Inventions can be exhibited only if they have been invented less than five years ago or were not used earlier than five years ago, independently of the patent protection form or the territory where the protection is in force. In this respect all technical creations are considered to be an invention, including new species of plants or animals and the computer software that have a strictly technical application.

The entry-fee is HUF 12.500.- (included V.A.T.; USD 50) per invention for all participants.

One WEB page is also available per each entered invention.

Individual inventors and member organisations of IFIA are entitled to get a 3 square metres show area or - in case of a collective show - a 2 square metres show area per invention (consisting of a wall, a table and a chair, as a minimum) free of charge from the organisers.

For the other exhibitors the rental fee of a minimum show area of 3 square metres is HUF 45.000.- (included V.A.T.; USD 180).

The evaluation, the jury and the awards:

The evaluation will have two phases. In the first phase the organisers will publish the inventions entered on the INTERNET (www.inventor.hu). The judgement of the inventions takes place before the opening of the Fair, on the basis of the Internet WEB pages where the inventions are shown. The inventions will be evaluated according to their inventiveness and possible future benefits (with weighting of 70 %). The member of Internet jury can specify three place winners in each category by the 3rd of May 2000.

In the second phase the local jury rank the exhibited inventions according to the quality of display and presentation (with weighting of 30 %). The outcome will be aggregated by the organisers, and the winners will be selected in each section.

The winner in each section will receive a gold Olympic medal, the second a silver medal and the third a bronze medal. The other qualified inventors will receive GENIUS medals.
